Saving Tasmania's difficult birds

Mon, 27 Jul 2020

Tasmania’s orange-bellied parrots, swift parrots and forty-spotted pardalotes are perched on the edge of extinction. Traditional conservation strategies have failed to reverse this trend. Monitoring by the Difficult Bird Research Group at the Australian National University revealed that these birds are at a crisis in which every day counts.

To enable a rapid response to the crisis, the group embraced high profile media and community engagement to underpin Australia’s most successful conservation crowd-funding campaign. They are now addressing the challenges these birds face with a wide range of innovative world first techniques.
